The "Merchant" (1895) -
Trade Boat of Walter Kitching
Stuart Merchants Since 1883:
Walter Kitching started it all by providing goods and services to the
pioneers along the Indian River from his boat the “Merchant”
pictured above. Walter and his son-in-law, John Taylor began their
mercantile business in Stuart in the early 1900’s. John began the Insurance business in
1937. After a stint in the 82nd
Airborne in WWII, John’s son-in-law, Dick Ashley joined the firm in
1946. In 1957 Taylor-Ashley moved to its present location. The
tradition of customer service and complete customer satisfaction
continues today as the fourth generation operates the business.
